Default Guild question from newby

Been playing the entire start section with a mesmer/ranger and am now level 8 and ready to move on.

I noticed the last time I played that there was a message in pink text saying that I was invited to join a guild. So far I have very little idea about guilds, their advantages, and what kind of commitment I make in joining one. But I have a very basic question first:

How did I get invited to join a guild? Did someone just accidentally see my character hanging around in town? Or is there some way to view a player's stats? I am curious about how this works.

For getting invited all they have to do is type in your name and it enter in the guild window, advantages, well I can only name one since my guild is PvE only atm, and that is having a nice group of people to play with that can help you and each other, and can also help get you better weapons earlier on in the game.

The only stats anyone can see about you are your primary and secondary professions and your level (for the character that you are currently logged in as, granted the person viewing it in the same town as you and has either clicked on you, bringing up the top bar or has viewed the Me/R8 tag that floats above your head in mission areas).

As the previous poster said, all you have to do to invite someone into your guild is to be the leader/officer of said guild and send an invite by typing the person's name in the Invite This Person box. More often than not in the case of a blind invite like that someone was running around towns inviting random people, or maybe they saw Mesmer and decided that they could use you in their guild. Either that or you had a conversation with someone and they decided to invite you, but proper etiquette dictates the invitee should ask whether the person is interested in the guild or not before inviting.

A quick shot at your other inquiries:

In a land of random instances and accounts without common handles, the Guild is really the hub of your social life in Guild Wars. Sure, you can talk to random strangers in town, add someone to your friends list, but more often than not you will be socializing and interacting with people from your own guild. So your first advantage is to have a group of hopefully like-minded individuals to chat and hang out with.

Plus, if guildmates are further along than you (which I'm guessing, as long as you don't join a one-person guild that was formed one day previous in Pre Searing, is the case) they can throw back items and materials to you, and help you along the game if the need arises. I'll respond to anyone in guild that really, really needs just two more scales for Pyromancers just because I'm a huge pack-rat and I don't need them anymore, and most guilds are the same way. If you need a low-lvl flat bow for your starter ranger, you can ask the guild to hold on to those instead of merchanting them. Or if you are having trouble with a quest, or where to find X skill or how to defeat this guy or that guy, you have some experienced players a tab-click away in guild chat most likely willing to help you.

The other advantage, of course, comes in PvP. You'll have a (hopefully, again) organized group for PvP that can work together as a team and execute complex group actions that you most likely won't find in a random PUG. Joining a guild will also open up the possibilities for Guild versus Guild combat. Plus, you can play Hide and Seek in the Guild Hall when you are bored, meet there to trade, hold wild dance parties, etc.

The commitment you make to your guild really depends on how much you want to put into it. You can sit and enjoy the cape, talk on the guild chat once per month, and sit around and do basically nothing for the group, granted your guild is lazy and doesn't care. Or you can get into GvG, make friends with people in your guild, form guild groups for crazy missions, and get the most out of your guild experience.

Now, of course, that was all highly idealized and the guild I was proposing most likely doesn't exist in Guild Wars. Another thing about the commitment is that you can leave at any time by opening the guild roster and clicking "Leave my guild," so there's always room for experiementation until you find the right one.
